Republican Presidential hopeful Donald Trump on Monday called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States, after the mass shooting in San Bernardino last week by two radicalized Muslims.
Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican Presidential nomination for the 2016 Elections has been making anti immigration statements ever since he announced his candidacy this summer, starting with calling Mexicans criminals and rapists.
Now, the billionaire real estate mogul has made his most dramatic statement yet after the shooting in San Bernardino where two Muslims killed 14 people. The FBI has deemed the assailants as radicalized, so Trump took his chance and started his campaign for prevention of Muslim immigration.
According to Reuters, he stated “We have no choice,” while being at a campaign stop in South Carolina and added that if the United States does not take the necessary measures there would be another 9/11 attacks. He also said that until the country’s representatives figure out what is going on there should be a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States. He state “until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad and have no sense of reason or respect for human life.”
His campaign manager Corey Lewandowski confirmed that the proposed shutdown is to be applied to everyone, including student visas, tourists and other travelers.
This statement did create a lot of backlash for Trump, with many of the Presidential contenders blasting him for being un-American and being a bigot. According to Reuters, the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination Hillary Clinton tweeted that Trump’s idea is “reprehensible, prejudiced and divisive.” Even the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Nihad Awad blasted Trump stating “This is outrageous coming from someone who wants to assume the highest office in the land. It is reckless and simply un-American. Donald Trump sounds more like a leader of a lynch mob than a great nation like ours.”
The White House has also come out in disgust by Trump’s statements and the spokesman Josh Earnest stated that Trump is “seeking to tap into a darker side, a darker element, and try to play on people’s fears in order to build support for his campaign.” He called Trump’s presidential campaign a “dustbin of quality.”
Donald Trump is playing on the fear of many Americans that Muslims are out to attack the United States and who think that radical Islam is the greatest threat to American national security. He tries to bolster his position by stating that the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, is coming to the states. Conservative voters are falling for such rhetoric and are keeping Trump at the top of national opinion polls for months.
